June - Month In Review

Thursday, June 30, 2016

I'm trying out this month in review idea, so let's see if it sticks!

FAVORITE POSTS:
- This post talking about my thoughts on living outside of Utah and how I was right. I knew I would love it!
- Still proud of the hair I did here.
- These nails turned out better than I expected.

BOOKS:

Broken Monsters: 9/10. The only thing I didn't like about this book were the metaphors. I wasn't sure if they were actual metaphors or just really creative writing. All in all it was a great read.

T.V./MOVIES:

The Bachelorette: I don't know why I'm just starting this? But it's 100% television gold. Like, there are sooo many good one liners. I also can't believe guys like that exist? Like, where do the come from? Where have they been hiding??

Suits: I reluctantly started this with Jake but now I'm hooked. All I want in life is for Mike and Rachel to hook up. Oh, also every time I watch this I am like, "Yeah! I love New York!" and then I get on a subway that smells like pee and think, "Harvey is so happy because he doesn't have to deal with this."

Felicity: I watched this a while ago but never finished, so I have been starting again. I honestly feel like her life is my life, in regards to the New York struggle. I started watching it right after we moved here too so it's been interesting to see what she does with her New York struggles. ALSO LOL AT THEIR APARTMENTS. Like, they are going to be in huge debt when they graduate with their little 2 bedrooms in East Village. Come on, Hollywood.

NEW MUSIC:

If you guys aren't already following my Indie Chill playlist, then go follow it! I add all my new finds there. My top 3 favorites from this month are James Dean by Jr. Jr., No Scrubs (feat. Jon Santana) by Cappa, Anchor by Sophia Black.

MILESTONES:

- I got a new job! An actual 8-5, non-minimum wage job!
- We cemented our next few years and we're really happy about how it turned out.
- We booked our first Airbnb guest! Ha!

Eating Waffles By Myself

Wednesday, June 29, 2016

Sometimes I have mega-fails in New York. Like every time I get off the subway and have 0 sense of direction. #fail. Or basically every time I buy produce at Aldi. #fail.

Last week I had a few errands to run downtown. I found the library fine, but then it all went downhill. I went to Gideon's Drugs on 37th where I heard they sell Zoya nail polish. I wanted to get some more colors for my weekly nail series. So, I walk in and look everywhere in the store but all I can find is like a little 6x6 box by the register. I choose like 4 colors, bought them and then started walking out. THEN I SAW AN ENTIRE WALL OF VARIOUS ZOYA COLORS. Ugh I was so bummed haha. I really wanted a black and white, but after spending $33 on naili polish I felt like I should just leave lol.

I stopped at Nutella Bar for some pick-me-up food and it was basically Nutella heaven. I settled with the waffles which you all know I'm obsessed with if you've been watching my Snapchats (@emmy.jake). I had Nutella waffles like 4 days in a row the other week haha. (Also I left my bag of nail polish underneath the table and the woman next to me flagged me down before I lost them forever! New York really does have nice people.)

Anyway, then I realized I was pretty close to a Trader Joe's. I have been wanting to try their pretzel bagel, so I made the trek over there and THEY WERE OUT OF PRETZEL BAGELS.

So, basically New York kicked my butt. It's weird living here because it kicks your butt sometimes, but then other times it like cradles you like a baby and feeds you chocolate haha. Ah.

A Happy List: 124 - AKA THE ONE I FORGOT TO PUBLISH

Monday, June 27, 2016
Ok this photo was taken on July 29... but it's better than the photo I had chosen so I am keeping it lol.
YOU GUYS. IT FINALLY HAPPENED. After 123 happy lists, I finally missed one. UGHHHHHH MY LIFE THIS WEEKEND. I am catching this on Sunday, July 3 FML. Anyway, I had this entire thing written out and scheduled, but forgot to click "publish" so little did I know it's just been sitting as a DRAFT. I don't know why but stuff like this makes me so mad haha. Anyway, better late than never. Since I did write all of this before Monday June 27th, I am still going to say I haven't missed one for real, because I still wrote it, I just didn't share it with you guys. Anyway...

When Jake sasses me. I always sass him and he never gives it back, so it's so funny when he does.
Discovering a local ice cream shop that has fruity pebble soft serve! And cereal crusted cones!
Being able to get refunds for our flights to Denver like 6 days before the flight!
Making a huge decision FINALLY. I will do a whole blog post about it soon.
Finally finding somewhere that sells Zoya nail polish.
My friend's new song! She got sick beats.
The biscuit french toast at Jacob's Pickles.
Officially quitting Anthropologie.
The tan lines from my Birks.
Cereal. So good.

Here are some funny things people said this week:

Jake when seeing a weiner dog: "That dog is like hovering!"

Me: "Goodnight"
Jake: No response
Me: "Goodnight"
Jake: No response
Me: *turns around in bed* "Goodnight?"
Jake: "Oh!! I thought you were having a scary dream like Trixie."

Jake: *so seriously* "Student debt ruins lives."

My mom: "I feel like your generation can't do critical thinking."

Weekly Nail: Sunsetty

Sunday, June 26, 2016

I am so disappointed in these photos but these nails were seriously IMPOSSIBLE to photograph. They kept blending whenever I made them brighter, so I just gave up.

Anyway, did anyone get my Baby Mama reference? Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are my favorite power couple even though they aren't a couple.

OH. And also Zoya is having a buy 3 get 3 free sale, which means that it's like $4 a bottle which is a GOOD DEAL. Go buy some. Just enter the code "34free" and follow them on Instagram to see more deals. I am obsessed with their polish.

250 Calorie Raspberry Breakfast Bars

Saturday, June 25, 2016
Ok these are literally the best. I bake them at the beginning of the week, put them in the fridge, and eat one for breakfast almost every day! If I'm not eating these I'm eating shredded apple and yogurt (also the best).

Anyway, I took the recipe from here and then tweaked it. Oh, and don't mind the lighting in my kitchen that is the absolute worst. In case you are wondering why I photograph everything on my bed, THAT'S why.

I have been trying to find a lot more healthy recipese that aren't totally bland. I have a major sweet tooth so I pretty much crumble if I'm only eating raw vegetables and like, a piece of bread lol. So, if you have any tips on how to make regular recipes a little bit healthier, I'm all ears!

Anyway, here's the recipe! You can print this if you'd like!

Treat House

Friday, June 24, 2016

She was going crazy hahaha. So Jake was just standing in the middle of the sidewalk and not letting her sniff around as punishment lol. I don't think she really understood what was going on because she was crazy the whole time.

Ok let's talk about Treat House. Yes, that is a table filled with rice krispies. Yes, those rice krispie treats are adorable. BUT YOU NEED TO GET THE COOKIE DOUGH ICE CREAM RICE KRISPIE TREAT BAR... THING.

I was told to get the ice cream bar instead of the rice krispie treats, but I am the worst and didn't listen. So we made our way back there a few days later to try the real deal haha. I am not disappointed.

Also, the guy who works there is SO FUNNY. We mentioned how we were new to the area and he started telling us about New Yorkers. He was saying how they are the strangest people you will ever meet and how we should pray for them hahahaha. I can't say I disagree! The attitude of some people here is crazy. The sass knows no boundaries.

Weekend Happenings!

Wednesday, June 22, 2016
Goodmorning everybody! The past weekend we both had to work on Saturday which sucked, so we didn't get to explore as much as we usually do.

On Friday night we got some good news, so to celebrate we went to Blockheads! We were dying because we were sitting inside and it was SO LOUD. Like, we thought that by sitting inside it would be quieter than on the street but noooo. If you follow me on Snapchat (@emmy_jake) then you know what I'm talking about!

The chips and salsa was so good! I got a tofu taco and a butternut squash taco. Next time I would just stick with the tofu. The tortilla it was served on was so good too. A+ A+ A+. Also Jake said his steak quesadilla was the best he has ever had haha.

Can you even handle this sock monkey wall?! #amazing

I obviously can't handle not getting dessert, so we tried the concrete at Shake Shack. I'm not the biggest ice cream person, so I probably wouldn't get it again.

Saturday we both had to work (boo) but I did get some good news after leaving work so naturally we had to celebrate! We went to EJ's Luncheonette again and this time I got the crunchy french toast which was DELICIOUS. Jake got another burger and loved it.

Anyway, hopefully I'll be able to share all this good news with you guys in a few weeks, but needless to say we have some super exciting changes coming up!

Lindsey Pengelly Inspired Hair Tutorial

If you read this title and were like, "who?" then STOP READING AND CLICK HERE. Is she not the babe to end all babes? Srsly. I am obsessed with her hair! She has extensions (obviously). I am always on and off about extensions. Some days I really think I should get them to have thicker braids. Other days, I like being able to tell people that my hair is all mine.

I can't decide! I just don't like when people are like, "Oh your hair is gorgeous. Is it real?" And the person is like, "No I have extensions." And the other person is like, "Oh." Like it some how discredits how gorgeous their hair is because they have extensions? Or like people will be talking about a girl with pretty hair and say, "She has extensions, though." Like it's a bad thing?

Idk. Is it a bad thing?! I can't decide if I want to get them or not because I don't know what the general consensus is!

Ok anyway, so I saw Lindsey do this braid and decided to try it sans extensions and see if I could still get fairytale princess volume. I think I did ok?

I mean, it's obviously not as volumous as hers. But for everyday outings I like a little less dramatic volume.

Anyway, idk. Should I get extensions or nah? Like is it on the same page as people who get like size X boob implants? Or is it just like something a lot of people do?

ADVICE NEEDED.

A Happy List: 123

Monday, June 20, 2016
This dog never holds still lol.

The lighting in my apartment is so weird. I swear to you.

Like why do my braids have a blue tint?!

I was supposed to hear back about a job early last week. I never heard back so I thought I didn't get it but I actually did!
Taking Jake to Aldi for the first time. And also getting some yummy foods finally, like Nutella.
Finally finding a place for my moody/film-y photography. I have a Tumblr! Follow it here.
My brother's selfies with his girlfriend on Snapchat. (He like never does social media.)
Discovering my life is literally Felicity. (Except replace the boys with food lol.)
Jake realized how fun big dogs are and isn't against getting one in the future!
The bulldog at Z'baby. Passing him always makes our day.
Being able to give directions to tourists like a bossssss.
Getting super ahead on blog posts.
Doormen! They are so nice.

Here are some funny things people said this week:

I talked about this on my Snapchat (@emmy.jake) so sorry if you've already heard it. But I was at Central Park and this guy came up to me and said, "Sorry if this is weird?" I said, "Yeah?" He said, "I thought you were attractive and just wanted to see what you were like." I said, "Sorry, I'm married." He said, "Oh, you are?" and checked my hand to see if I had a ring haha! Then he said, "Well, you have a really sexy dog here." I said, "Thanks" and then he walked away. LIKE WHAT HAHA.

Whenever I am mad at Jake I always say, "I'm mad at you." But now it's become sort of a joke too, like I'll say that when I want a back rub or attention haha. The other night I kept telling Jake how mad I was at him and we were laughing. We rolled over to go to bed and I was the big spoon (which I hate!) and after a few seconds of silence Jake quiety said, "I'm mad at you." Hahahahahah.

Me: "I'm dead."
My mom: "Why."
Me: "I've had a headache for 2 days."
My mom: "Oh. Probably, then."

Jake has this new thing where he'll say, "Dinner on me!" or "Dessert on me!"  when we are going out just the two of us. Like our finances aren't merged lol.

Me: "How does my nail photography look?"
Jake: "On fleek."

Posts in the blog-o-sphere I'm loving: Not exactly a blog post, but I died at this Vine. / This post is so opening about the money you can make blogging. I love that she is so transparent about everything. / Did you guys see Barefoot Blonde's husband's YouTube video? I thought it was going to be his own filming, but I still thought it was super cute. I made Jake watch it and it made him want a son lol. Five more years, bb!

Clothes I am loving: I bought this shirt becuase I think it's so funny for some reason. / This Modcloth dress that's only $20! / I have learned very quickly that comfortable shoes are a MUST in New York City. I currently have SIX BLISTERS from walking 15 blocks yesterday in heels. SMH. I think I'm going to buy these and these next paycheck. / I love shirts like this that poke fun haha.

Weekly Nail Is Back

Sunday, June 19, 2016

That's right! I'm bringing the weekly nail back because I miss it. Also, if you have tips on how to photograph nails please let me know. My nail photography is ghetto AF.

I don't know if I ever talked about it here, but about 2 months ago I made the switch to natural nail polish. I got rid of all the nail polish I had accumulated over the years and bought 2 bottles of Zoya polish. I have been SO HAPPY with Zoya so far and would recommend it to anyone. I've decided if I'm invited to go get a manicure I'm not going to say no, but for the most part I want to stick to the natural nail polish. I've been really enjoying it so far!

For these ombre nails I used this color, this color, and a makeup sponge! It's actually pretty easy. You just do a base coat of the lightest color. Then, draw two lines on the sponge with each polish (one line per polish). Then you just stamp it on your nail! It will get all over your skin, but I just removed it with a q tip after and it was NBD.

I want to do a blue to green ombre next!

Hot AF

Saturday, June 18, 2016
These are the faces of 2 people who walked 20 minutes in Midtown in heavy clothing and HEAT AND HUMIDITY ONLY TO FIND OUT THEIR DESSERT PLACE WAS CLOSED.

On the plus side, there was a kid our age on the bus who kept Snapchatting himself with his tongue out against the wall. But, he couldn't get it right so he kept deleting it and doing it again lol.

Having A Dog In New York City

Thursday, June 16, 2016
I always assumed having a dog in New York would be so hard for the owners and so sad for the dogs. Now that we are babysitting this fool I have 100% changed my mind! Skip the rest of this if you don't care about dogs. (Lol.)

You have to walk them more, so if you don't like walking your dog (more of a backyard person) then yeah, it's probably not the best choice for you. But, I love walking! There is a park about 20 minutes from us called Carl Schurz and it has views of Brooklyn and a dog park. Oh, and Central Park is a 10 minute walk from us and has off leash hours before 9:00 am and after 9:00 pm. So I have been alternating between the 2 and it's been so fun! Also here I feel like dogs are so much better behaved inside. Our apartment is pretty small and this big dog we have been babysitting hasn't minded the space at all. So, that's reassuring. Oh, and not to mention dogs are allowed almost everywhere! I see dogs in grocery stores, clothing stores, coffee shops, etc. So, it's kinda cool to be able to run errands with your pup.

Anyway, I'm glad we hosted a dog through Dog Vacay because now we know! It's possible to have a dog in the city and 100% worth it! Hopefully we'll be getting Trixie soon, just gotta work out the details!

GO NEW YORK CITY DOGS!

Cupcake ATM

Wednesday, June 15, 2016

Ladies and gentlemen, I give to you, the cupcake ATM. For sure one of the best creations.

On Sunday we walked the pup down to the ATM and got a cupcake. There is even a little camera that shows your cupcake being picked! Jake has been convinced that there is just an employee in there who goes and gets the cupcake after you order it, but I'm not convinced haha.

This was the salted caramel and it was SO GOOD. I would definitely recommend.
