5 20 2013: gallery stroll

Monday, May 20, 2013

Friday night I decided to hit up Salt Lake’s gallery stroll. I picked up a friend and we headed up there.

We ended up parking in the ghetto and walking past homeless people, only to go to the convention center and sit down on a bench. We decided to try to find a Trax station and go to Blonde Grizzly, because they have the coolest art. I looked up their current exhibit and it turns out it was something Star Wars, so we decided to go to the Photo Collective gallery instead. It turns it out it was right by where we parked in the first place, and it was super cool!!!

It was a loft atmosphere and there were lots of people standing around looking at photographs and drinking boxed wine. There was a darkroom door, but we didn’t know if it was decoration or not. So, we gave it a twirl and it opened up into the loveliness that is photos 2-5. LOVED IT.

It turns out it’s a place where local photographers can rent studio time and attend classes. If you are in the area and interested, I saw on their website that they are accepting interns. I haven’t found out if the darkroom is for rent or not yet, but hopefully soon! I can think of nothing funner than finally being able to develop again.

Have a lovely Monday evening, I have a surprise for you tomorrow.

XOXO

5 19 2013: guest post

Hello you guys, Emily has asked me to guest post for her, and how could I say no? I'm Kati and blog over at Almost Stylish where I share my outfits, DIY ideas, recipes and all things that make daily life beautiful. Today, I'm going to share some things that make me a happy camper!

Riding. I've been riding for many, many years now, and it still doesn't loose any of its magic to me. I love being outdoors, working with the horses and doing all the stable chores.

picture taken by Patrick Müßiggang

Food. I know this one might be obvious as anyone likes food, but it really does make me happy. Sitting in front of a big bowl of pasta when you are really hungry is the best thing!

New fabric. Shopping for fabric is a very good thing in my eyes and makes me very happy!

Aidan. My boyfriend is my favourite person and he certainly does make me happy. I took this picture on a trip to the north of Germany and for some reason, I really like it!

Cats. Oh, how do I love thee! They are cute, cuddly, furry and just the best pets ever. A cat makes a life complete. Full stop.

I would be delighted if you hopped over to my little corner of the Internet, Almost Stylish, and told me what makes YOU happy!

5 17 2013: film from dc

Friday, May 17, 2013

First taxi ride every my friends!! The driver was from India and definitely wanted to chat the entire ride.

So, we walk into McDonalds in Adam's Morgan and start ordering. I order a "hamburger kid's meal, except I don't want the meat pattie on the hamburger". The cashier stops clicking her buttons and stares at me for a solid four seconds. "I don't eat meat." "So..." "So, I just want like the bun and the veggies and stuff." *cashier giggles to herself* "Ok..."
Like, I'm sorry, but have you honestly never had anyone do that before?! In all my years I have never had anyone act like it's weird to get a hamburger without the meat, because they all know the word VEGETARIAN. Some people make me LOLFR.

Walked around Eastern Market after breakfast and stumbled upon some pretty amazing artists. I loved this guy's work, with the rusted wood and all. I bought an absolutely beautiful print from some other guy. I can not wait to hang it up in the new apartment. I swear to you, markets and festivals are prime for prints and pottery. To this day, I cherish my mug I got at Salt Lake City's Art Festival last year.

Before we went to museums all day...

During going to museums all day...

After going to museums all day...

Most beautiful walk way to Lincoln's Memorial! Seriously, I couldn't get enough. It was just so pretty!

So, our flight left at 4... and our check out time was at 12... and we were up by 9... So, we grabbed some breakfast at the hotel and then decided to just go to the airport since there was nothing else to do. It was the only time I have never not brought my laptop on the plane, and I regretted it so badly!! We were there forever, and so I just resorted to eating everything in sight. I ate a donut while waiting in line for security. I bought a pretzel from a woman who's english vocabulary literally consisted of "pretzel" and "thank you". We then went for a walk to another part of the airport where I purchased a Toblerone (for like $4 (cough rip cough off), I might add). I then ate half of the Toblerone. Then, we went to an airport restaurant, where I ate some fries and a caesar salad. After which, I proceeded to finish off the rest of my Toblerone.
Grossest, right?! Plus, I easily wasted so much money on stupid airport food, just because I was bored out of my mind.
LIKE PUT A TV IN HERE OR SOMETHING. I did play lots of Freecell though. My win streak is almost to 1,000. So, be proud.

Flying back was randomly the most beautiful sight. Look at those mountains! I love it when you can see the ground from the plane. Also, every time I'm on an airplane, I think about that episode of the Twilight Zone where that guy is on an airplane and he keeps looking out the window and seeing a creature on the wing. Lol. Such a great show.

But, I loved D.C.! And, it was so much fun going on one last trip with my mama before I become a wed woman!!

Just some photos I took because I wanted to get my film developed lol. I actually did a little thing for mother's day with the last 8 photos, but it's not necessary to be posted.

Mainly, just know that me and Trixie love you.

Also, I was talking to a wise woman today and she said this: "We don't get older, we just get better." Like, how brilliant is that? Maybe being younger means we can go more places and look more attractive, but those things are so fickle and unimportant in the grand scheme of things. As we get older we learn more about the world. We learn how to communicate with each other effectively. We learn that there are lots of people in the world. We learn what's really important and where we need to focus our time.

It's a shame that growing older is so often considered a negative event. In reality, I think it's completely appropriate that we have birthday celebrations. It is a celebration! We are becoming better at communicating and relating to others. We are becoming the best we can be! What's wrong with that?!

These photos are from my film camera, so don't judge me too harshly.
I somehow stumbled upon an England journalist who is rereading all the Stephen King novels in the order they were published. I of course flipped out at the brilliance of this idea and started from week 1.

Carrie was good.
Salems' Lot was good.
I already read Misery a year or two ago, before I was doing this whole "rereading thing".

The Shining was next and after that was Rage. Now, please take a moment and look Rage up on Amazon and try not to drop your mouth at the price. In 1997 (I think) and high school student shot up his school. When the police were investigation, they found Rage in his locker (which is about a boy shooting up his school). Stephen King immediately pulled his book from production, considering it was the inspiration for a horrific event. Now, it is out of print and rare. I don't have $400 to spend on a book, so I figured I would just skip it.

However, my lovely, lovely fiance found it for me! See, for a while Stephen King wrote under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman, and there is a book with four books written by Richard Bachman. One of which is Rage!!!! So, needless to say, our Friday night consisted of Jake taking "a short nap before the movie" and me reading for hours and then falling asleep... only to wake up at 2:00 and continue reading for a good part of the early morning. I finished it Sunday night and it, of course, was amazing.

I have such a lovely husband to go through all the trouble to find that for me! Now, I'm just waiting for The Shining to arrive...

5 12 2013: realizing

"We must not let our passions destroy our dreams." My passions were getting in the way of my school work, which leads to my dream of helping people learn to be happy and living outside of Utah. I let friends and fun take priority and temporarily destroy my dream.

"Almost all misbehavior and addictive problems arise from individuals seeking happiness in some form." I recently talked with a friend who discussed with me his reasons for hating material things. He hates them because people think others are more attractive just because what they have, and it's not what's most important. He then informed me that he was trying to get happiness back that he had on his recent trip. He was attempting this by drugs... which is a material thing... Darn happiness. Why are you so hard for some people!

"Craziness is only a matter of degree." We all have our thing. I can't share spoons, suckers, ice cream cones, or straws that have been chewed. I can't have my feet dangling off the chair in movie theaters, couches anywhere, or my bed at night. I can't drink after my brother ever. If there is one cup of milk left in the carton, I can only drink 3/4 of it, because the rest is backwash. I can't share toothbrushes or allow little children to kiss me on the lips.

Moral of the story. Don't let things you're into now prevent you from getting what you want in the future. Be strong and get your priorities in order. Find things that are positive to make you happy, and make sure they actually make you happy. And, remember, we're all crazy. Just in different ways.

Have a lovely Sunday.

5 11 2013: sunsets and burgers

Saturday, May 11, 2013
beautiful sunset monday night from suncrest!

explored the city and took some photos of a friend!

absolutely perfect weather for our engagements

k. even though my burger was pickles and tomatoes on a bun, it was still SO DELICIOUS. new favorite burger place in the UC.

Basically life has consisted of amazing sunsets and Netflix. In case you're debating watching any of the following, allow me to give you my opinion.

Take This Waltz: SO DUMB. Like, the filming is absolutely gorgeous. It's beautiful visually, but Michelle Williams talks like a baby at least four times and I just can't handle that sort of thing. Ya know?

LOL: SO DUMB. LIKE WORSE THAN WATERWORLD. Let me paint a picture for you. Miley Cyrus (aka "Lola") walks into the bathroom where her mother and little sister (who is ten) are bathing together. "Lola" takes off all of her clothes and hops in the shower... Like, have I just been showering wrong my whole life or is that not normal? Grossest.

Safety Not Guaranteed: SO GOOD. I would highly recommend this. It's so funny and so cute. Omg. Dying. It's the cutest ever.

The Gossip Girl series, minus the last season: EH. Worth watching, but nothing can ever beat the love I have for Dawson's Creek.

The Killing: SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO GOOD. LIKE SERIOUSLY GO AND WATCH IT RIGHT NOW.

Wilfred: DEC. It gave me anxiety. Also, all they do is smoke weed, so that's that. Mainly, I watch it for the grown man in a dog suit, but, you know. We all have our thing.

Like Crazy: MEH. The two main characters are cute. But, it's sort of a waste of time. Like, knit a hat while you watch it or something.

Movies I started but stopped because I thought they were terrible...
Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog, The Great Gatsby (the old version), The Awakening, Goats, The Imposter, The Snowtown Murders, and Haywire.

So. That's what life has become.
Please help me. Why are my summers always spent being inside and so unproductive?
SRSLY.

Pretty much the only bad thing about my 35mm lens is that it makes for extremely awkward self photos. With my arms outstretch to their max, the end result is still a super close, strangely cropped photo. Guess you can’t have it all.

Ate the first snow cone of the season. It was “fuzzy navel” and it was delicious. If your local snow shack doesn’t offer that flavor, it’s just peach and orange. Get it. You’ll fall in love.

Turns out the Trafalga in Lehi is like, the dopest shiz err. Their mini golf is on the third floor, and it has all these walls and is maze like and has neon paintings everywhere. I lost though, which means I have to do laundry for all of July. FML.

Also, they have this bowling game that is just like real bowling. It even gives you tickets for your score! Seriously, it was the funnest ever. We bought some squirt guns with our tickets and squirted Trixie off the couch. She wasn’t too please.

We hit up McDonald’s afterwards, and you know how when you pull up to the window the person usually says something along the lines of, “Thanks for choosing McDonald’s, what can I get for you?” Well, we literally were waiting like five minutes and no one greeted us... Finally, Jake was all, “Hello?” and then the person was like, “Order whenever you’re ready.”
Like, we had been taking forever?! I don’t think so ho. LOL. We took our food to the three story park and ate it on the swing while watching little Utah county fall asleep.

Funnest night award.

Welcome to the kitchen of my future apartment and the Provo gallery stroll.

I’m not going to lie. Basically the only places worth going for the Provo gallery stroll are Muse and that church on the corner. All the rest always have the same stuff and it’s just stupid. Salt Lake’s has like gold in every building. Gosh. I still dream about those distorted watercolors of superheroes. I think I shall start attending that one.

After we unloaded some stuff at our apartment, we were walking to the first gallery and Jake’s uncle popped out of Communal! He told us to come in and eat with them, so we did. The whole idea of just one big table and sharing it with strangers is really weird to me. I want to see what it would be like if you sat next to someone you didn’t know. They had the most amazing quinoa salad though. And now I can cross that restaurant off my list! Yay.

I don’t understand why District 9 isn’t on Apple TV for rent yet. Also, I don’t understand why my TV doesn’t hook up to my Apple TV. Also, I don’t understand why I haven’t finished the last half of the last season of Gossip Girl yet. Holding on to the inevitable I suppose.

5 2 2013

Today started with me checking my grades and realizing I got a 1.96 for winter semester. This is problematic for two reasons.
1.) THAT GPA SUCKS OMG LIKE COULD I BE A WORSE STUDENT PROBABLY NOT
2.) Fall semester, I didn’t do so hot and got below a 2.0. I was placed on academic warning. Which basically says, “Hey, if you don’t get above a 2.0 next semester, you will put on academic probation, and if you don’t get a 2.0 after probation, then you’re on suspension and have to take a year off.”

So, naturally when discovering I was .04 away from being fine, I had a full fledge panic attack and literally freaked out. I called at least four numbers and tried to plan on how to stop being an idiot. Mainly, the plan I’ve come up with is this: independent study.
I can get off academic probation if I get above a 2.0 on at least 6 credits. So, as long as I do three or four packets over the summer and get good grades, then I will be completely fine. The only problem is that I literally have no money at all to buy the packets. I don’t work that much and I still have to buy bridesmaid dresses, wedding favors, any jewelry I want to wear, and random other shiz. So, I have no idea where this much need cash is going to come from. Maybe we’ll have some leftover from the wedding. Hopefully. Otherwise I am completely screwed. Gosh. College is so much harder than high school. It’s not like you can just go to class and do your homework and take your tests. You have to take notes and listen intently in class and then do your homework and look over it to understand the concepts and then do all the reading and make sure it solidifies in your brain and then study for at least 10 hours for the test to get a decent grade.

Maybe that’s just how school is for me. But, whatever.

So, after having my freak out I decided I just needed to occupy myself with something until I get paid and can *maybe* buy my first packet. I started going through my high school box and transferring it to a more secure plastic one. I found lots of letters friends wrote to me and even a notebook me and my friend kept. It was so weird reading through that. I seriously was writing things like, “the greatest medicine is in the emptiness of everything”. Which, is sort of true, I’m actually going to blog about that tomorrow. But, everything I was writing was so angsty and empty and robotic, it made me feel so weird. In the notebook my friend kept telling me that I was helping him and being a good influence on him, but jeez it sure didn’t seem like it with my depressing writing. Get with it Young Emily.

Glad that emo stage is over.

Then I hit up some bikram yoga solo and surprised myself. I thought I’d be sitting down most of the time and having the worst time breathing. However, I only had to rest two or three times, and never left the room. I made it through the whole session and felt really good at the end. The studio gave me a free smoothing from the cafe as well!

(Side note: My itunes just started playing Lenny Kravitz’s “Lady” and Trixie got up and left. Looks like I’m not the only hater!)

Yes, I am still freaking out about sucking at school and failing at life, but bikram really helped take my mind off of all of that for an hour and a half. Pear haps it shall become a habit.

XOXO
